Sunderland International Airshow is celebrating its 21st show this year from 10am – 6pm on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July. The two-day event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to Sunderland’s stunning coastline at Roker and Seaburn, is now the biggest free airshow in Europe.

Visitors to Saturday's event are enjoying a great day of action with thrilling displays in the air and lots of action on the ground. With highlights including the Vulcan Bomber, flying for the first time over Sunderland on Saturday only.

Those planning to see the Red Arrows at 12noon on Sunday 26th are advised to set off early, particularly if planning to make use of the Park and Ride service detailed below.

 

The action packed flying programme features front line jets, vintage aircraft, a parachute display team and aerobatic teams. The spectacular Red Arrows will be back again this year at 12noon on both days to give us an amazing display of aerobatics and precision flying.
 
If that’s not enough, there will be even more entertainment on the ground including The Band of HM Royal Marines (Scotland), Royal Marines Combat Display Team and the 4th Royal Artillery Light Gun Display team in the arena, children’s entertainment, a wide range of exhibitions and promotional displays, plus a number of trade stands.

12noon – 1pm and 1.30pm – 4.45pm*
*Times are provisional and are subject to change.
 
Flying Display
This year’s thrilling national and international display teams will include:
 
The Vulcan Bomber for the first time (Saturday only), plus The Royal Air Forces Red Arrows (12noon both days), Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Spitfire, Hurricane, Dakota), Falcons Parachute Display Team, Typhoon, Hawk, Tutor and Kingair.
 
The Blue Eagles will be returning to this year’s Sunderland International Airshow with the Apache for the first time and the Lynx.
 
The show will also include the Belgium Air Component F16, Royal Netherlands Air Force F16, The Black Cats, Chinook (Sunday only) and Sea King Helicopter.
 
The Blades Aerobatic Team, DC6, Swift Glider Team,Team Guinot (Sunday only), Vulcan Bomber (Saturday only) will also be performing.
 
On The Ground
There's an action-packed Arena programme on Cliffe Park, with displays form The Band of HM Toyal Marines Scotland, The Royal Marines Commando Display Team and the 4th Field Regiment Light Gun Display. 
 
The Royal Navy, The Army and The Royal Air Force ground show on Cliffe Park and at Bede's Cross is your chance to meet members of The Armed Forces.  
 
Elsewhere there are flight simulators, exhibitions from Pot Noodle, EA Games, Pokemon, Anchor Cream and Nintendo to name just a few. With a variety of entertainment across Seaburn and Roker there's always something to excite and entertain the whole family.

Programme
You can also pick up a programme for just £3 to make sure you don’t miss any of this action – packed weekend. Programmes are available throughout the site during the event. 
 
Planes TV will be filming the event throughout the weekend. Customers can pre-order a copy of the DVD to remind you of your trip to the Sunderland International Airshow. Stay Safe
Due to the large crowds expected at the event, please ensure that you:
  • Identify a specific meeting point on arrival at the event.
  • Attach wristbands to your children, these are available from the information points, stewards and police officers, alternatively, provide your child with your mobile phone number.
  • Please dress appropriately for the weather.
Park and Ride Information
A park and ride shuttle service will operate between 9am - 7pm each day at Fulwell Quarry (near Millers Inn, SR5 1JT) and Community North Sports Complex (Kingsway North, SR5 4BB) and will cost £5 per car.
 
Car parks will be signposted from major routes to Sunderland and supervised throughout the day. Shuttle buses will operate at 10 minute intervals between 9am - 7pm when the car park will close on both days. Please note that there will be no access to the car park after 7pm.  
 
There is limited car parking available at the seafront on a first arrival basis, which is £6.50 per car.
 
Free parking will be available for orange and blue badge holders next to Morrison’s petrol station.
 
Shopmobility will be located in front of the Seaburn Centre on both days. The service will provide wheelchairs free of charge to those who need them.
 
The Airshow's official radio station BBC Newcastle will be broadcasting travel, weather and programme updates from site on 95.4FM, DAB and www.bbc.co.uk/wear
 
Public Transport
A number of public transport services will serve the seafront.
 
The nearest Metro Station to the event is Seaburn (15 minutes walk to the seafront). Additional Metro trains will be running on both days.

Buses

There will be a special express shuttle service 510, running over the weekend from outside of Wilkinsons, Fawcett Street in Sunderland City Centre to the Recreation Ground at Seaburn. The service will run every 10 mins between 10.20 and 19.00 and call at The Wheatsheaf, Newcastle Road (next to the Stadium of Light Metro), Station Road (next to Seaburn Metro). On the return journey, the service will leave from the Recreation Ground, before calling at Station Road and Newcastle Road and terminating at Joplings in the City Centre.  

On Saturday 25 July, passengers from Sunderland can also catch services 18/19 to Roker and Seaburn from Sunderland City Centre, although these will follow slightly different routes from normal in the Seaburn area. Services E1 and E6 will not operate from Sunderland between 10.00 and 18.00, and Service E2 will not serve Fulwell and Seaburn between these times. From South Shields, Services E1 and E6 will operate between South Shields Market and Seaburn Camp only between 10.00 and 18.00, and Service E2 will follow a different route from Whitburn. 
 
On Sunday 26 July 2009, passengers from Sunderland should catch the special express shuttle service 510 detailed above. From South Shields, there will be an increased daytime timetable, with Services E1, E2 and E6 all operating every 20 minutes. Services E1 and E6 will only operate between South Shields and Seaburn Camp between 1000 and 1800. Although Service E2 will continue to operate between South Shields and Sunderland (every 20 minutes), these buses will not be able to serve the Fulwell and Seaburn areas.
